BEHIND THE DESIGN

My aim was to create a spice storage system that not only solved common kitchen problems but also brought beauty and storytelling into an often-overlooked part of cooking. I wanted something modular, functional, and sustainable, while keeping it visually engaging.

For my final year, I also knew I wanted a project that would let me work with my hands — something highly tactile that required me to physically build, cut, fold, and assemble. I’ve always been drawn to packaging, paper engineering, and the craft of turning flat materials into three-dimensional objects, so this project allowed me to fully explore that side of my practice.

Each container holds a refillable paper-based spice pouch. A key challenge was designing the pouch to fit snugly inside the narrow box while remaining easy to remove and pour from. After multiple iterations, I landed on a shape that offered both flexibility and control without needing any plastic parts.

Materials were chosen for both function and feel: recycled card for the outer containers, kraft adhesive labels for a warm, tactile finish, and minimal use of glue to support recyclability. All printing, cutting, folding, and assembly was done manually—giving me a hands-on understanding of how this product might scale in future production.

PROCESS ABOUT THE PROCESS

ZAVYA

Spices Designed for Your Cabinet
Zavya is a modular spice packaging system designed to bring both structure and storytelling to everyday cooking. Inspired by global spice traditions and the aesthetics of tile patterns, Zavya reimagines how spices are stored, accessed, and experienced.

Each triangular prism container is designed to stack seamlessly, allowing users to organize blends by theme, flavor, or frequency of use. The system promotes sustainability through refillable inner packets and reusable outer boxes, reducing single-use packaging waste.

I chose Zavya as my graduation project to rethink how we interact with everyday items like spices. I wanted to create a system that’s not only functional and sustainable, but also rooted in visual storytelling. It was a chance to combine my interest in modular design, cultural aesthetics, and meaningful daily rituals.

Built for both practical function and visual appeal, Zavya transforms the act of seasoning food into a more personal, organized, and enjoyable ritual.

Zavya includes curated spice sets like Global Essentials, Aromatic & Floral, and Heat & Depth, each marked with distinct color-coded patterns. These visual cues help users identify and connect with different flavor profiles, making spice selection more intuitive.
