BEHIND THE DESIGN
My aim was to create a spice storage system that not only solved common kitchen problems but also brought beauty and storytelling into an often-overlooked part of cooking. I wanted something modular, functional, and sustainable, while keeping it visually engaging.
For my final year, I also knew I wanted a project that would let me work with my hands — something highly tactile that required me to physically build, cut, fold, and assemble. I’ve always been drawn to packaging, paper engineering, and the craft of turning flat materials into three-dimensional objects, so this project allowed me to fully explore that side of my practice.
Each container holds a refillable paper-based spice pouch. A key challenge was designing the pouch to fit snugly inside the narrow box while remaining easy to remove and pour from. After multiple iterations, I landed on a shape that offered both flexibility and control without needing any plastic parts.
Materials were chosen for both function and feel: recycled card for the outer containers, kraft adhesive labels for a warm, tactile finish, and minimal use of glue to support recyclability. All printing, cutting, folding, and assembly was done manually—giving me a hands-on understanding of how this product might scale in future production.
